Viagra (sildenafil) and sildenafil (tadalafil) are two commonly prescribed medications used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), respectively.
There is no specific FDA approved dosing for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED). However, some clinicians may prescribe sildenafil and/or tadalafil for patients with ED who fail to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. Patients with ED and PAH should be given sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in Viagra and tadalafil. The recommended starting dose of sildenafil is 50 mg, taken as needed approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. Patients should be instructed to take it only when they anticipate sexual activity. It is not a substitute for professional medical care. Patients should be instructed to use the medication only when their physician prescribes it. If a patient does not achieve an erection sufficient for sexual activity, or if the patient does not reach sexual arousal sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity, the patient should be instructed to use the medication only when the patient directs, or directed, at sexual activity. The patient must also be instructed not to engage in other sexually transmitted diseases or conditions, including HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or gonorrhea. Viagra and tadalafil are approved for patients who cannot achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. Patients should be instructed to use the medication only when they anticipate sexual activity. If a patient does not achieve an erection sufficient for sexual activity, the patient should be instructed to use the medication only when the patient directs, or directed, at sexual activity. A man who took part in a study in the Toronto area has been jailed for two years for selling counterfeit prescription medicines, in connection with an alleged conspiracy to supply him with counterfeit Viagra.
Sophie Nallie, 43, a registered nurse practitioner at Fort Toronto General Hospital, was jailed on Monday for three months for selling counterfeit prescription medicines and for illegally importing the medicines. She pleaded guilty to the charges after she received an undercover package containing counterfeit Viagra tablets.
The prescription drug was imported from China that she bought from a drugstore in Toronto, Ontario.
Nallie was arrested in Toronto and is expected to be sentenced in April.
She was ordered to appear in Toronto provincial court and face a minimum of six months in prison. She was also ordered to pay a $15,000 fine and pay $250,000 in restitution.
Sophie had previously pleaded not guilty to all counts of importing and selling the counterfeit medication and the drugs, but only entered the plea in Ontario Superior Court where she will remain pending sentencing.
The trial in the Quebec Superior Court is scheduled to begin Nov. 6.
The Canadian Health Products Regulatory Agency says the company that brought in the counterfeit Viagra was aware of the sale but failed to disclose it to the Canadian authorities.
She said in a statement that "there is no evidence that it was used to distribute counterfeit Viagra or otherwise."
In addition, the company said it was aware of the case and has "certain arrangements with the appropriate provincial, federal, and national regulatory authorities to safeguard public health."
According to a spokesperson for the company, it "remains unclear why the two individuals were not sentenced to prison in Canada."
